Use the Cameras Already Installed, Whoever Made Them
RTSP is the standard protocol for streaming live video from a camera or recorder, and the transport behind camera and VMS recording. AI Live Insight reads those streams directly, from the camera or from an NVR or VMS that re-streams it. Each recording lands in the Nexus library with its detections timed against it. The cameras, recorders and VMS on site stay as they are.
How it connects
AI Live Insight connects to each source over RTSP. Adding one takes its domain or IP, port and stream name, with a username and password where the source requires them. The source can be the camera or an NVR or VMS that republishes its stream. AI Live Insight connects to either the same way and needs no integration with the VMS product.
The stream flows inbound only. AI Live Insight reads the existing H.264 or H.265 bitstream, with the codec detected per source. It records the stream bit-exact, with no re-encode and no GPU encoder load. Detections become timed data paired with each recorded segment, and recordings land in the library under one Recording Folder organized by camera. Each camera's detections, recordings and access rights resolve to one identity.
Ownership makes no difference. A privately owned camera, such as one a business runs, joins the same estate when its stream is reachable over RTSP. AI Live Insight can pull the stream, or the owner's system can push it. Because the integration is with the protocol, a camera or recorder not named in the catalog is usually still a supported source. Nothing flows back. Where a VMS or NVR stays in place, camera control, device management, its metadata and its users stay with it.
What you can do together
Analytics on the cameras already installed
AI Live Insight adds analytics to an existing estate of any make that publishes RTSP, with no camera replaced.
One view across makers and owners
AI Live Insight puts cameras, recorders and privately owned cameras on one Camera Streams page, in folders laid out like the site.
Recordings held as evidence
Nexus keeps each recording and its detections under the access control, retention and chain of custody that Digital Evidence Management work depends on.
Nexus as the video management system
A deployment built on Nexus records and plays back live surveillance itself, so it can serve as the agency's VMS.
A scenario
- Monday morning, headquartersThe IT lead adds each lobby and sally port camera in AI Live Insight with its IP address, port, stream name and credentials. Each appears as a live tile on the Camera Streams page.
- Monday afternoon, the lotShe adds the NVR's re-streamed endpoints rather than the cameras behind it. The NVR keeps recording and keeps control of its cameras.
- TuesdayIn AI Live Insight she sets detection settings camera by camera and groups the cameras into folders. The watch desk sets four tiles per row and searches by title.
- WednesdayThe pharmacy's system pushes its storefront stream over RTSP. AI Live Insight adds it to the same estate as the sheriff's own cameras, in its own folder.
- The following weekA detective investigating a break-in at the lot opens that camera's Recording Folder in Nexus. The recording carries its detections as timed data, under the library's access control, retention and chain of custody.
What stays where
The cameras, NVR and VMS keep running
Recording, camera control, device management, VMS metadata and VMS users stay where they are. AI Live Insight reads the stream alongside them and replaces nothing.
The stream is the whole connection
It flows inbound, read as the source emits it. Nothing is written back, and a camera joins only if its stream is reachable.
Recordings and detections live in Nexus
They sit in one Recording Folder per camera, with the same access control, retention and chain of custody as every other content type.
Processing can stay on site
AI Live Insight and Nexus deploy on premises or air-gapped, so streams can be read and recorded on the customer's own infrastructure near the cameras.
Products and solutions
- AI Live Insight reads the streams, and the recordings land in Nexus
- Digital Evidence Management (DEMS), where those recordings are held as evidence
- AI Video Analytics, Safety and Compliance Monitoring, School and Campus Safety and License Plate Recognition
Next step
See it on your own RTSP instance. We will show the connection made, the data moving and the output, then size it for your deployment.
