Move a Kaltura Library Without Re-Encoding It
Kaltura is a long-established enterprise video platform, and a library that grew there over years carries metadata, a category tree and renditions that took real effort to build. The Kaltura connector brings that library into Nexus with its metadata and category hierarchy intact, reusing the renditions Kaltura already transcoded, so consolidating video platforms starts with the archive rather than with a re-upload. Kaltura keeps serving until you decide to switch it off.
How it connects
Kaltura is an ingestion connector whose purpose is migration. The connector reads the existing library and brings it across with metadata, category hierarchy and sub-hierarchies preserved. Three settings shape the run: whether to import the transcoded files Kaltura already holds rather than re-encoding from source, the point in the library to sync from, and which moderation states to ingest. Configuration lives in the portal, entered once by an administrator.
The migration is a one-time ingestion rather than continuous synchronization, so it is run when the organization is ready to move, not left open as a live link. Nothing flows back to Kaltura, and nothing on Kaltura is changed. The migration carries content, metadata and hierarchy; who can see what in the new library is set by the portal's own roles, groups and sharing.
What you can do together
- Bring an entire Kaltura library into Nexus with its metadata and category tree in place, so people find things where they expect them.
- Skip re-encoding by importing the renditions Kaltura already produced, so the library plays as soon as it lands.
- Choose what comes across: only approved content, only from a date onward, with the rest left behind.
- Give each recording a transcript aligned to its timeline and a place in search, and hand training material to the portal's courses, quizzes and LTI links to the LMS.
- Ask AI Intelligence Hub, included in Enterprise Video Platform, a question across the migrated library and get a cited answer limited to what you may see.
A scenario
- SetupThe administrator configures the Kaltura connector in Nexus: import existing transcoded renditions, approved content only, sync from the start of the 2017 academic year.
- Migration runThe library comes across with its category hierarchy, so
College > Department > Course > Termappears in the new library as it did in Kaltura, with each recording's metadata attached. - First day of termFaculty open their courses and find the recordings in place, playing from the imported renditions. Nobody waited for a re-encode.
- First weekEvery recording is transcribed. A student searches "eigenvalues" inside a linear algebra lecture and plays from the moment the word is spoken.
- Same monthA teaching assistant asks AI Intelligence Hub, "Which lectures last spring covered the central limit theorem?" and gets a cited list. Retrieval ran under his identity, so courses he cannot open were never candidates.
- When readyThe university retires Kaltura on its own timetable, after the migrated library has been checked.
What stays where
Kaltura remains the serving platform until you switch
The migration reads from it and changes nothing there. Users keep watching on Kaltura for as long as you keep it up.
Nexus takes what you scoped
Moderation states, the sync point and whether renditions are imported are settings you chose, and the metadata and hierarchy arrive as they were.
Nothing is lost in the move
Categories, sub-categories, metadata and renditions come with the content, and the new library adds transcription, search, retention and an access model on top.
Processing runs where the portal runs
Transcription, indexing and the assistant run on the portal's infrastructure, as SaaS, in your own cloud or on your own servers.
