Integration brief BlackboardLearning Management

Add Video Without Rebuilding a Decade of Courses

Ask a university what sits in Blackboard and the honest answer is years of its own teaching. Course shells copied forward term after term, departments with conventions nobody wrote down, and a central team that administers the whole estate rather than a thousand instructors doing it themselves. Adding video to an estate like that has to cost nothing in rebuilt courses. Nexus is registered centrally as an LTI 1.3 tool, as the portal behind the Enterprise Video Platform (EnterpriseTube) solution, and every existing course keeps working exactly as it did.

What you can do together

01

Add to a course instead of remaking it

An existing shell gains one linked item from Nexus. Nothing is migrated, and no department is asked to redesign a course that already works.

02

Stop sending students somewhere else

The recording plays in the Blackboard page a student is already in, so the separate video site and its separate sign-in fall out of the week.

03

Survive the annual course copy

A copied course carries the link forward, still pointing at the one recording in Nexus, so a library does not multiply every August.

04

Govern the whole archive from one place

Access rules, retention and viewing analytics sit with the recording in Nexus, not in each course that links to it, which is what makes ten years of material reviewable at all.

How it connects

This is an administrator's integration before it is an instructor's. Blackboard registers Nexus through the LTI 1.3 dynamic registration flow, validated by a one-time token against an allowlist of domains, and the tool then becomes available to courses across the institution. No Blackboard-specific connector is installed, and setup is documented for Blackboard.

Inside a course the tool behaves as the standard specifies. A faculty member or an instructional designer uses deep linking to browse the Nexus library from within Blackboard and returns the recording she picks as a launchable item in the course. Roles map at launch, so she arrives in Nexus as an instructor and a student arrives as a student. When the student opens the item, the video streams from Nexus into the Blackboard page and the viewing accrues in Nexus, where the recording lives.

Results travel back the same way. A quiz carried at a chosen point in the video reports its score to the Blackboard gradebook automatically on submission, and a written answer can be graded by hand where it needs a reader. That depends on Blackboard exposing the LTI Assignment and Grade Service. Enrollment, course copy and the gradebook itself stay Blackboard's.

How it works BlackboardLearning Management

A scenario

  1. Between semestersAcademic technology registers Nexus through dynamic registration with a one-time token. The tool becomes available across the institution, and the university's existing course shells are left untouched.
  2. Week one, historyA professor opens the seminar course she has taught for six years. From inside Blackboard she browses Nexus, finds the archive interviews her department recorded, and links two into the reading week module.
  3. Tuesday, 14:00A student opens the module between classes and the interview plays inside Blackboard, streamed from Nexus.
  4. Week fourQuestions carried in the second interview are answered in the player. The scores reach her Blackboard gradebook without her transcribing anything.
  5. Next AugustThe course is copied for the new cohort and the links come with it, still pointing at the same two recordings.
  6. ReviewThe library reads viewing in Nexus, retires what nobody opened under the university's retention rule, and the change reaches every course at once.

What stays where

Blackboard keeps the course

Enrollment, course structure, assignments, the gradebook and the copy-forward process that carries a course into the next term all stay in Blackboard.

Nothing proprietary is added to it

The connection is the LTI 1.3 standard rather than a Blackboard-specific connector, with documented setup, so upgrades on either side remain independent.

Nexus keeps the recordings

One copy holds the access rules, the retention schedule and the viewing analytics, however many courses reach it.

Deployment is the institution's call

The portal is offered as shared SaaS, a dedicated instance, in a university's own cloud tenancy, or on its own servers.
